Dump Smart is here to help mobile companies understand how to properly dispose of wastewater resulting from their business practices. Businesses that provide carpet cleaning, pressure washing, painting, janitorial, and other mobile services have one major thing in common: the work they do requires water!   Proper wastewater disposal is important for ensuring the health and safety of the community, the environment, and businesses. Wastewater can contain toxic chemicals that can harm humans and wildlife habitat.

Proper Waste Disposal Tips:

Simple Best Management practices can make a big impact in protecting water ways and keeping communities safe.

  • Wastewater should be dumped down drains inside buildings where it will drain to the sewer system.
    • Per the Chelan-Douglas Health District, water resulting from carpet cleaning is considered "wastewater" and should not be dumped outside due to chemical and biological contaminants.
  • Filter wastewater to prevent clogs in the sewer system.
  • Keep all of your equipment well maintained to ensure that filters are operating properly. Maintain all tanks, hoses, and fittings to prevent leaks.
  • Carry a spill kit.
    • Report spills that make it into the stormwater system. Contact the jurisdiction where you are working if there is a spill that reaches the stormwater system, this will ensure staff can clean the system before the wastewater reaches receiving waters.
  • Whenever possible, invest in cleaning equipment  and cleaning practices which minimize water use.
  • Train all staff members on appropriate carpet cleaning best management practices, spill clean up and reporting, stormwater pollution prevention and discharge requirements.

Stormwater Rules

Per local City and County Code, it is illegal to discharge wastewater from any mobile business into the stormwater system:

  • Chelan County Code Chapter 13.14 (Resolution No. 2019-52)
  • Douglas County Code Title 19.44 (Ordinance No. TLS 19-16-41B)
  • East Wenatchee City Code 13.20 (Ordinance No. 09-14)
  • Wenatchee City Code 4.10 (Ordinance No. 2018-38)
