WPD Patrol

WPD New Badge

The 24 officers of the department’s Patrol Division provide services to our citizens 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year. Our officers serve 12-hour shifts and are grouped into six-person squads consisting of one Sergeant, one Corporal and four officers.

Our patrol cars are rotated on a regular basis and are well-equipped. Each one has a patrol rifle, less lethal shotgun, DVD dash-mounted camera, and mobile data terminal which allows the officers to quickly receive information in the field. Many of the patrol cars have speed measuring devices (SMD’s), and those that don’t use portable SMD’s to check the speed of vehicles on our City roadways.

Patrol officers in our agency respond to more than 20,000 calls for service each year. This does not include traffic stops or self-initiated contacts.

Our officers are thoroughly trained for basic collision investigation, basic Spanish phrases, interview and interrogation techniques, and have attended crime scene investigation courses. Officers also receive regular training in emergency vehicle operation, defensive tactics, firearms, domestic violence and receive regular legal updates.

Reduction of crime and enhanced traffic safety are high priorities for our patrol officers. Community involvement is encouraged and popular within the department. Many annually participate in “Walk to School”, “Tip a Cop” (for Special Olympics), “Bowl-A-Thon” (for CASA and the YMCA) National Night Out and Concerns of Police Survivor events. Others serve on local boards, service groups, or take the time to coach or mentor children in structured settings.
